Lovin' Van Life: Find Your People on the Open Road

A nomadic dating, community, and builder-marketplace app built for Quin Gables' van-life audience — powered by RevenueCat.

The Problem

"Dating and friendship-building are difficult for nomadic van lifers who are constantly moving."

— Quin Gables, Creator Brief #2

Traditional dating apps assume users stay in one place. You match with someone 200 miles away, and by the time you plan a meetup, one of you has already moved on. Mainstream platforms have no concept of travel trajectory — the single most important variable for nomadic connection.

The same friction applies to friendships and practical needs. Finding a hiking partner, a beach bonfire crew, or a qualified electrician to help with your van's solar setup is nearly impossible when you're in a new town every week. There's no centralized, trusted platform that serves the mobile van-life community.

Target Audience

Lovin' Van Life targets the rapidly growing North American van-life and nomadic community:

The audience skews 22–45, digitally native, values authenticity over polish, and prioritizes experiences over possessions. They're underserved by every existing dating and social app on the market.

The Solution

Lovin' Van Life is a mobile-first iOS app with four core features:

1. Trajectory-Based Dating

Instead of matching on proximity alone, the app compares users' planned travel routes. Each profile shows where someone is heading — and the matching engine surfaces people whose paths will actually cross. A match card might read: "Your paths cross in Big Sur in 3 days." Users swipe to connect, accept or decline incoming requests, then message and plan meetups.

2. Interest Beacons (Community)

Users drop location-pinned activity beacons — hiking, yoga, climbing, campfire jam sessions, beach bonfires — that nearby nomads can discover and join. It's spontaneous, lightweight, and designed for people who don't stay anywhere long enough for traditional event platforms. Real-time participant counts and activity-type filtering keep it simple.

3. Builder Marketplace

A directory of experienced van-build experts (electrical, solar, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, full-build design). Users browse profiles with ratings, specialties, and hourly rates, then book paid consultations through in-app purchases. This is a direct monetization channel and solves a genuine pain point — finding trustworthy build help on the road.

4. Invite-Only Access

Every new member enters via a single-use invite code from an existing member. Upon registration, each user receives their own code to share. This creates an organic referral chain rooted in real-world trust, keeping the community vetted and authentic. Firestore-backed validation ensures codes are single-use and tamper-proof.

Monetization Strategy

The Core Thesis: Match Free, Pay to Message

Every dating app in the world has proven one thing: the moment a user wants to talk to someone they're attracted to is the highest-converting paywall moment in consumer apps. Lovin' Van Life exploits this directly.

Free users can create a profile, set their trajectory, swipe through matches, browse Interest Beacons, and explore the Builder Marketplace. They get genuine value and invest time and emotion into the app. The paywall appears at the exact moment they want to act on that investment — when they try to message a match.

The user has already swiped, already matched, already seen the celebration screen. They're emotionally invested. Now we ask for $14.99/mo to unlock the thing they want most: the conversation.

What's Free vs. Pro

Free

$0
  • Create profile & set trajectory
  • Swipe & match with nearby nomads
  • Browse & join Interest Beacons
  • Browse builder profiles
  • Default app theme

The Activation Funnel

The path from install to paywall is designed to build emotional investment before asking for money:

  1. Enter invite code — scarcity and social proof from day one. The user already feels like they belong to something.
  2. Create profile & set trajectory — 3-step onboarding (activities, van details, travel plans). By the time they finish, they've invested 3-5 minutes and feel ownership.
  3. See matches on the map — immediate visual payoff. Nomads nearby, paths crossing, synchronicity scores. The user sees the value.
  4. Swipe & match — free. The dopamine hit of matching keeps them engaged.
  5. Try to message → PAYWALL — the natural upgrade moment. Match celebration screen shows "Upgrade to Chat" with the RevenueCat paywall. The user is already emotionally committed.

Premium teasing is woven throughout the free experience. Lock icons on chat buttons, "Pro" badges on the beacon creation FAB and builder booking, and locked theme cards in settings all build awareness before the hard gate.

Why $14.99/mo

$14.99/month is positioned between casual dating apps ($9.99) and premium niche platforms ($19.99+). Van lifers are accustomed to spending on tools, gear, and services — a subscription that helps them find travel partners, adventure buddies, and build experts is an easy sell. The price point also signals quality over commodity, which aligns with the invite-only positioning.

We currently offer a single monthly tier. This is intentional for MVP — one product, one price, one decision. Annual plans and additional tiers can be added via the RevenueCat dashboard without app updates once we have conversion data to inform tier design.

Secondary Revenue Channels

Beyond the subscription, the app architecture supports two additional monetization paths that become relevant at scale:

RevenueCat Integration

All subscription management flows through RevenueCat's SDK. The LOVIN_VAN_LIFE_PRO entitlement is checked at every premium gate via a shared Zustand store, ensuring consistent enforcement across all four tabs. The native iOS paywall is presented via RevenueCatUI.presentPaywallIfNeeded(), so paywall design and copy can be A/B tested from the RevenueCat dashboard without shipping app updates. Customer center, restore purchases, and subscription management are all wired to RevenueCat's built-in UI.

Summary

Lovin' Van Life solves a real, underserved problem: nomadic people need connections that move with them. The monetization strategy is simple and proven — let users invest emotionally for free, then gate the action they want most (messaging) behind a $14.99/mo subscription powered by RevenueCat. Premium teasing throughout the free experience builds desire before the paywall hits. One product, one price, clear conversion thesis — designed to go from zero to revenue fast.
